Let's make a child smile (literally)
Friends, family, colleagues.
Earlier this year I agreed to run a half marathon for a very good cause - Operation Smile (http://www.operationsmile.ca/)
I'm on a mission, that mission is simple - enable one or more children to smile and have a better life. Next weekend (10th November) I'll be running on behalf of the charity Operation Smile.
As you may or may not know our son was born with a cleft condition. We thank god that he was born in Canada where he had access to fantastic healthcare. 7 surgeries later he's well on the way to becoming a fit and healthy young boy. Unfortunately, this is not the case elsewhere in the world.
In many underdeveloped parts of the world as many as 8 out of 10 babies born with a cleft condition die as a result of their mothers not being able to feed their child. For those "lucky" ones that do survive they face a hard life filled with stigma, bullying and social isolation due to the facial and speech deformities that get worse with age. As a result of the malnutrition from not being fed properly as an infant, cleft kids are physically undeveloped and have ongoing health problems.
You get the picture, it’s not pretty - this is where Operation Smile comes in. Many of the world’s leading craniofacial surgeons, doctors, and nurses donate their own time and money to do ‘medical missions’ in undeveloped countries. For as little as $240 per child, we can change a cleft child's life forever, giving them the surgery needed to make them smile.
If you could sponsor me, I promise you that :
- I will run, walk, crawl 13.1 miles (21.1 km) in a sanctioned half marathon (which I can tell you is not easy for a big slow guy)
- I will personally thank you in a special way ... (to be revealed)
Appreciate you reading this, if you can donate - great, every dollar, pound, euro helps! If you can't, don't worry at least you now know what Operation Smile is all about. Please feel free to share with friends and family on social media, etc.
Together let's enable a child to smile!
